Sony A7 and A7r Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Anouncement
The $1,699 Sony A7
Sony just announced 2 brand new cameras in their mirrorless camera lineup to coexist with their already well established NEX lineup. Oddly enough though, they bare the mark of Sony's bigger alpha mount DSLRs. The two new cameras, the A7 and A7r are set to release in the beginning of December. Both cameras have very similar stats. Both feature a first for these type of cameras with 35mm full frame sensors wrapped up in these tiny bodies. Awesome. This is fantastic given the price points. The A7 retails for $1,699 with a 24.3 megapixel sensor (the same sensor found in the A99) while the A7r is going for $2,299 and has a 36.3 megapixel sensor. The A7r also lacks a low pass filter, which means the images will be theoretically sharper. Other features include a 5fps burst mode, a gorgeous OLED viewfinder and a tilty flippy screen™ (as seen on Sony's other cameras). They have all the same basic features that every other NEX system offers, including panorama and HDR modes, wifi and downloadable apps from within the camera itself.
The $2,299 Sony A7r
With such an amazing (and stylish I might add) set of twins and with, what I believe to be, relatively fair price point, there's bound to be something wrong with this equation. Well you'd be right. See how I keep mentioning NEX here, well with NEX comes e mount and yes, you guessed right, these have an e mount. There is of course the $200 adapter you could get to use a mount lenses on these, but that aside, not only is this not natively a mount, since these are the first ever full frame e mounts, you are limited to the newly announced full frame e mount lenses...which there are only four of. So that sucks, but another negative here with such a small and lightweight body, you start to compromise battery life and here is no exception. With a paltry 1080mAh battery, these are only rated at 340 shots with the lcd screen on. All in all though, I think these are a very appealing, and attractive, couple that are definitely worth giving a look, unless of course you're holding out for a new, cheaper full frame DSLR or something.
