Thoughts on Artistic Progression

An Older Photo From 8 Years Ago.

There's very distinct paths you can take when you take on photography. Some people get into photography to document life, to capture a moment in time that will never happen again. This is where photojournalism and event photography like concerts or weddings reside. Personally, my interest in photography grew out of a need to express myself. I found the fine art side of photography so fascinating and something just clicked when I picked up a camera and tried to capture how I was feeling. Those emotions eventually evolved into the creation of different photos and projects over the years. Photography just had a je ne sais quoi to it, it just felt right. I was always interested in drawing, painting and other similar art forms, but I was never any good at them. With my camera in hand, I had a skill I felt like I was actually good at.

So that all being said, I've been cleaning up my photo library and of course I came across my older work in the process. As I looked through some of the really old ones from years ago, it sparked the idea for this post amongst other things. I saw this photo (the one above) and immediately started critiquing it. The composition is all off, the angle is wrong, the subjects position is in the wrong place, there's absolutely no post processing whatsoever and that lighting *shudders*. Of course I'm being very critical since it's my own work, as someone who just started learning photography it's not bad. The concept is there, I just couldn't articulate it properly through the toolset I was given and the limited knowledge I had. It's still mind blowing to me when I look back at the older photos I had taken and then look at what I've created now. While my skills have improved, something I've always had was the passion to create and use photography as a form of self expression. I don't think that will ever change.
